Just east of Phoenix sits Mesa, a city that’s so much more than a suburb. Sure, it’s close to the action of the Valley, but Mesa has its own vibe, full of color, culture, and adventure.

You’ll find a thriving arts scene, fascinating history, and plenty of local flavor, from cozy coffee shops to buzzing festivals. And when you’re ready to escape the city buzz, the great outdoors is right at your doorstep. The mountain trails, peaceful rivers, and sparkling lakes are waiting to be explored, all framed by the breathtaking Sonoran Desert.

Whether you’re after flexibility, affordability, or just a fresh start somewhere sunny and full of life, renting in Mesa makes it easy to have it all. Let’s take a closer look at why this city might just be your perfect next move.

1.   A Diverse Economy

Mesa’s economy is fantastically diverse, with several key industries driving it. Sectors such as education, healthcare, tech, aerospace, and tourism are among the biggest employers in the city, providing a vast pool of job opportunities for renters from a variety of professional backgrounds. White collar jobs make up around 80% of the employment landscape, with blue-collar opportunities trailing at around 20%.

The city also provides a friendly environment for self-employed workers, who make up around 10% of the workforce. Plus, with Phoenix and the wider metro area on the doorstep, job opportunities abound beyond Mesa itself.

On the subject of Phoenix, the fact that it’s so close to Mesa is an obvious boon. While Mesa is a city in its own right, with plenty to see and do, it’s always good to change things up now and then.

Access to the larger city is facilitated by numerous major freeways, while public transit options, including light rail and buses, make commuting to downtown Phoenix and beyond a piece of cake. Not only is this great for broadening work opportunities, but it also makes it easy for denizens of Mesa to enjoy the attractions of its larger neighbor and the surrounding metro.

3.   The City Enjoys Great Weather

While “great weather” may be subjective, it’s hard to escape the fact that Mesa’s climate boasts long, hot, sunny summers and mild winters. For some, the peak summer months may be too hot, but on the whole, the weather in Mesa is warm and dry, with little rain and almost zero chance of snow and ice in winter.

4.   Endless Outdoor Pursuits and Stunning Scenery

The fantastic weather in Mesa is perhaps one reason why outdoor activities are so popular in and around the city. Add in stunning natural surroundings, taking in mountains, lakes, rivers, and forests, and it’s easy to see why residents enjoy so many outdoor activities in their free time.

Watersports are particularly popular, with the Salt River providing countless opportunities for tubing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and rafting. Meanwhile, the surrounding lakes are ideal for fishing and swimming. For those who prefer to stay on dry land, the number of hiking and mountain bike trails in the area is incredible, with scenery ranging from dusty desert trails, rocky mountains, and the verdant Tonto National Forest.

And, why stick to land, when hot air ballooning and paragliding can also be enjoyed in the skies around Mesa?

5.   Lots of Things To See and Do

But Mesa is far more than a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The city is home to a vibrant arts scene, with several galleries and museums located along Main Street. The Mesa Arts Center is a major hub, showcasing stage shows, concerts, and art exhibitions from around the world.

Meanwhile, history buffs can spend days exploring the impressive Arizona Museum of Natural History, located in downtown Mesa. Fantastic for kids and adults alike, the exhibitions range from immense dinosaur fossils to the glimmering crystals and gems native to the area, and much more.

6.   It’s a Family-Friendly City

Mesa is particularly popular among families, with family households making up around 65% of the total housing stock. The city boasts Arizona’s largest school district, with a mix of public, charter, and private schools on offer. Standout schools include BASIS Mesa and Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies. Older students are also spoiled for choice, with a huge array of colleges and universities to choose from in the area.

Beyond schools, renters will find a variety of family-friendly amenities, including libraries, numerous city parks and playgrounds, and family-focused events to enjoy.

7.   Low Crime Rate

Even though Mesa ranks as Arizona’s third-largest city, it still feels relaxed, friendly, and safe. Most neighborhoods are known for being peaceful and community-oriented, and the city’s overall crime rate is impressively low, especially compared to other cities its size. It’s one of those places where you can truly feel at ease, whether you’re out for an evening walk or exploring your new neighborhood.
