Baltimore is among the oldest major seaports in America, and while the city’s bay may not join the ocean proper, there’s much more to it than docks and ports. The Chesapeake Bay area is dotted with gorgeous beaches, boasting various activities, amenities, and fun for everyone.

Many of these beaches are within easy reach of Downtown Baltimore, making them a top choice for a day in the sunshine for residents and visitors alike. In this guide, we’ll explore 5 of the best beaches in and around Charm City.

1.   Sandy Point Beach

Sandy Point State Park lies just southeast of Baltimore, around a 40-minute drive away, approximately one and a half miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. With a mile of sandy coastline, there’s plenty of space for sunbathing and sandcastles. Plus, designated swimming areas and a lifeguard service ensure everyone can enjoy the water safely. The beach also benefits from a spacious car park, as well as restrooms and showers.

However, there’s much more to see and do. The beach is just a part of Sandy Point State Park, which boasts an array of trails, as well as boating and fishing opportunities. Picnic areas and pavilions are dotted throughout the park, making it a great place for a whole day out. And, for those not bringing their own food, the Concession Stand serves an array of snacks and drinks.

Other points of interest include the historic Sandy Point Lighthouse and the Sandy Point Mansion.

2.   Miami Beach Park

Located in the small town of Middle River, just north of Baltimore, Miami Beach Park is another top choice for a beach day. Golden sands meet clear, blue waters, with the beach stretching for around 400 feet. Backed by reeds, trees, and other greenery, it’s a little slice of paradise and can be a remarkably peaceful place for sunbathing.

Lifeguards patrol the area, and it’s a top choice for a swim in the calm, tranquil waters. Visitors will find numerous picnic areas and pavilions that can be hired, alongside playgrounds and bathhouses. With free street parking, it’s easy to get to, and numerous grills, restaurants, and cafes in the area make it a fabulous spot to spend the day.

3.   North Point Beach

Once home to a popular amusement park in the first half of the twentieth century, nature has reclaimed much of North Point State Park. However, the parkland is still managed, and the beach makes for a superb day out. Located near Edgemere, just southeast of Baltimore, the beach is great for swimming, though there’s no lifeguard service. However, it’s particularly popular for fishing and crabbing. Several piers stretch out into the bay, where amateurs and pros alike can cast their nets and see what they reel in.

Remnants of the old amusement park, such as the old Trolley Station, now serve as a sheltered picnic area, with numerous tables and grills to enjoy a beachside lunch at. Other popular activities include hiking and cycling along the various trails in the park, or discovering some of the fascinating exhibitions at the Takos Visitor Center.

4.   Hammerman Beach

Hammerman Beach is part of the stunning Gunpowder Falls State Park, located to the northeast of Baltimore. Sometimes called Gunpowder Beach, the sandy coastline stretches for around half a mile. Visitors can swim in the cool waters, with a lifeguard service keeping everyone safe. However, Hammerman Beach is best known for being a top spot for kayaking and paddleboarding, with rental stations ensuring everyone can take to the water.

The beach enjoys excellent amenities, including several spacious, modern car parks, excellent restrooms and showers, and an array of nearby places to grab a bite to eat. Besides the beach, visitors can try archery at the nearby range, boating through the marshlands, or simply catching an epic sunset.

5.   Rocky Point Beach

Boasting 300 feet of golden sandy shoreline and pristine waters, backed by stunning greenery and interspersed with craggy rocks, Rocky Point Beach has something for everyone. Lifeguards ensure safety during the open swimming season, while several beach volleyball courts ensure there’s plenty to do for those who aren’t so keen on sunbathing. Kids will find playgrounds to enjoy, while water sports enthusiasts can take to the water from one of the many boat ramps.

Sailing is especially popular in the area, with the beach being home to the Baltimore County Sailing Club. Meanwhile, the rocks are great for rock pooling and fishing, and with several picnic areas, restrooms, and ample parking, it’s a top spot on a sunny day.
