What are the renters’ rights in Hampton?

Renters’ rights in Hampton are protected by the Virginia Landlord-Tenant Act, which covers tenants of apartment buildings; multifamily housing units with shared services; or a single-family home that is one of more than 10 similar properties that your landlord rents in the county, or one of four they rent within Hampton. According to this act, landlords are not able to charge more than two months’ rent for the security deposit. Upon moving out, the landlord is also required to return your security deposit within 45 days. If they plan to withhold the security deposit, they must inform the tenant within 30 days. Any deductions or additional charges must be itemized. Finally, landlords are required to provide a receipt for each rent payment.
