Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
Sault Ste. Marie lies along St. Mary’s River in the southern portion of the province. The city covers over 223 square kilometres near the Canada/United States border, and has a population of more than 73,000 people. Communities located near Sault Ste. Marie include Heyden, Garden River, Echo Bay, and Goulais River. The city’s proximity to Lake Superior, St. Mary’s River, and Lake Huron provides a variety of recreational activities and beautiful landscape to explore. The busy canal is a hub for shipping and logistics.
Real Estate Market Overview
With average house prices ranging from $150,000 to $250,000, Sault Ste. Marie is a very affordable place to live.
Sault Ste. Marie’s northern section offers a mix of newer and older single-family homes, plenty of vacant land, and some commercial options. Single-family homes in this section are often on larger lots. Older single-family homes, vacant land, and commercial spaces can all be found in the city’s central section. The majority of the city’s condo options can be found in the southern section, along with older single-family homes, commercial spaces, and vacant land. Major industries in Sault Ste. Marie include manufacturing, forestry, business services, retail, and government services including healthcare, education, and the lottery. Steel manufacturing is a large contributor to the local economy, with over 3,000 people employed at one company (Essar Steel Algoma) alone. Wood products, mostly used for furniture, are also manufactured in the city. Along with Essar Steel Algoma, some of the city’s largest employers include Tenaris Algoma Tubes, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Sault Area Hospital, Algoma District School Board, and Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and Casino. Sault Ste. Marie’s unemployment rate has been decreasing and sits at around 5.5%, which is on par with the national rate.
Transportation
Public bus transportation in the city is operated by Sault Transit Services, which has a fleet of approximately 30 vehicles. The buses service close to 10 routes, which provide over 5,300 passenger trips each day. Sault Transit Services also operates 10 para-bus vehicles, which are equipped to transport those with medical/mobility equipment. There is one major bus terminal in the city, located downtown, which provides access to all bus routes. The city is also serviced by Greyhound buses and the Sault Ste. Marie Airport.
Schools
The Algoma District School Board, Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire de district du Grand Nord de l'Ontario, and Conseil scolaire de district catholique du Nouvel-Ontario all operate schools in the city. Examples of Sault Ste. Marie schools include Northern Heights Public School, White Pines Intermediate School, Eastview Public School, Parkland Public School, Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School, Holy Cross, and St. Mary’s College. Private school options are also available. Post-secondary options in the city include Sault College and Algoma University. A new institution is set to open in the near future, which will be named Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig.
Family Life
The Art Gallery of Algoma is a large public art gallery that features four exhibition spaces, a studio, an onsite café, and a gift shop. Exhibits showcase works by local and national artists, including sculptures, paintings, etchings, photographs, and mixed media. The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site has been operating since 1895 and was once the longest lock in the world. Visitors can sail their boats through the lock and experience the water rising, walk along the canal and take in the views, or picnic in the nearby park area.
