In Jersey City, tenants are well protected throughout the rental process. For example, landlords are limited as to how much they can charge for a security deposit, with a cap on 1½ months worth of rent for the first year, then a maximum of 10% of the original deposit in each preceding year of tenancy. During the lease, landlords must give at least 24 hours notice before entering the rental unit for repairs or inspections. When it’s time to move out, landlords are required to return your security deposit within 30-days of your leaving.
