Renter’s City Guide to Peoria

Introduction

Enjoying an abundance of sunshine year-round — as well as close proximity to Phoenix and its amenities — Peoria is a fantastic place to call home, as it has something for everyone. It’s filled with parks, restaurants, events and museums, and has even been ranked as the 34th-best city for families in the U.S. by WalletHub and 4th on NerdWallet’s U.S. list of the “Best Towns for Young Families.” The city was also named #21 among the “Best Cities in Arizona for Millennial Job-Seekers,” was ranked the 9th “Happiest Place in Arizona” and was named 10th on Movato’s list of “Best Places to Live in Arizona.”

How big is Peoria?

With a size of 178 square miles, Peoria is about one-third of the size of Phoenix.

Where is Peoria located?

Situated 13 miles from Phoenix, Peoria lies four miles from Glendale and 130 miles from Tucson.

What is the weather like in Peoria?

Peoria experiences very hot, dry summers with low humidity and temperatures exceeding the 100s between June and September. During the winter months, average temperatures during the day can reach the upper 60s, while night temperatures can drop into the 40s. With more than 299 sunny days per year, Peoria only experiences around nine inches of rainfall annually.

What are the advantages of living in Peoria?

Nearly 300 days of sunshine per year, beautiful outdoors and great amenities make Peoria a fantastic place to choose as a home base. WalletHub ranked it 8th on its list of “Best Cities for Renters,” and thanks to its excellent schools and thriving businesses, this is quite a desirable Phoenix suburb. Sports-lovers can enjoy easy access to baseball and other pro sports, while nature enthusiasts have a myriad of regional parks and trails to explore. Lake Pleasant and the city’s several public pools offer a cooling refuge during the hot, sunny days.

What are the disadvantages of living in Peoria?

On the flip side, summers in Peoria can get disturbingly hot, with temperatures surpassing 100°F for nearly one-third of the year. Unfortunately, the lack of greenery only adds to the discomfort created by the heat. So, if you prefer lush green trees over shrubs and cacti, Peoria will likely disappoint.
