Renter’s City Guide to Toronto
CITY GUIDE
TORONTO, ONTARIO
Toronto is a city in the province of Ontario. It is also the capital of the province and the largest city in Canada.
The city has a large arts and entertainment industry and is often called “Hollywood North.” Toronto is highly diverse and multi-cultural with festivals such as Caribana that celebrate culture. Toronto is also home to a National Hockey League team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who play at the Air Canada Centre.
The city’s Major League Baseball team is called the Toronto Blue Jays. The CN Tower is located in the city and it is one of its most notable landmarks.
Real Estate Market Overview
In the Greater Toronto Area, the price of residential properties typically experiences large increases each year. For example, in 2014, prices on residential properties increased by 10%. Single-family homes continue to be one of the most in-demand property types in the market. The city therefore experiences a low inventory of these types of properties. Luxury homes in the city have been rising in popularity with there being a large increase in sales on these properties in 2016. Properties in the city do continue to sell despite the low inventory and higher prices in the area.
Rental Market
As with the price of single-family housing, rental prices on condominiums are also very high in the city due to a shortage of these units. Part of this shortage comes from people migrating to the city in search of jobs. Condo owners have less of an interest in renting their units to tenants because of their high selling prices. However, these spaces are still very popular, with people looking to rent these units bidding against others on condos and apartments. 6,000 units are currently under construction in the city, which will lead to more units to fill the high demand.
Employment
The City of Toronto has a few services to help job seekers find a job they love. These include the City of Toronto’s Employment Information website and the Toronto Employment and Social Services division for citizens. In addition to using these resources to their advantage, job seekers can plan on more jobs opening up in the Greater Toronto Area. A new branch of the General Motors of Canada Company has opened up a Canadian Technical Centre in Markham, which brings many job opportunities to the area. A few large retailers will also be opening up in Brampton in the near future, creating even more job opportunities.
Transportation
There are many ways to get around the city of Toronto. The Toronto Transit Commission has buses, subways and streetcars that operate within the city. The subway system in Toronto has a total of four lines with another line under construction. For national and international travel by air, there are two main airports in the city: Toronto Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Cycling is another way to get around, and designated bike lanes can be found in the city as well as paved off-road trails. Toronto even provides a City of Toronto Bicycle Map for added convenience. Toronto was also named the second most walkable city in Canada. In addition, a ferry service operates in the city.
Schools
There are two English language school boards in Toronto: Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board. There are also two French language school boards: Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud. The city also has two other religious, non-public school boards: Board of Jewish Education of Toronto and Toronto Adventist District School Board. There are also many different options for post-secondary education including universities such as the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. For students who are looking to attend college, Centennial College, and a francophone college, College Boréal, are located in the city.
Family Life
Toronto is a great place to raise a family. There are many activities for families to participate in located in the city. Sky Zone Trampoline Park, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Toronto and Mad Science Toronto make for a great day out with the family. Another great place for families who love hockey to look for is the Hockey Hall of Fame. Schools in the city are plentiful and with the many different types of schools, there is sure to be one that will fit a child’s needs. When children aren’t in school, there are many different summer camps that they can attend.
