ST. CATHERINES, ONTARIO
With a population of over 133,000, St. Catharines is the largest city in the Niagara Region of Canada. Located near the popular tourist destination of Niagara Falls, St. Catharines touches the shoreline of Lake Ontario and is close to other communities in Thorold, Lincoln, Welland, and Grimsby. The city has a variety of things to keep residents entertained, including a number of beautiful parks and outdoor spaces for recreational activities.
Real Estate Market Overview
St. Catharines is a fairly affordable place to live, with average house prices ranging from $300,000 to $600,000. St. Catharines’ northern section is a mix of single-family homes, condos, and commercial retail properties. There are mostly older, less expensive single-family homes in the city’s central section, along with small retail commercial properties, a few vacant lots, and larger industrial commercial properties. The southern section offers a number of vacant lots at a variety of price points, as well as newer and older single-family homes.
Rental Market
Over the past several years, vacancy rates in St. Catharines have decreased slightly overall, most significantly for one-bedroom apartments. Large economic contributors in St. Catharines include industries such as digital media, health and wellness, bioscience, education, public services, and manufacturing. The largest employers in the city include the District School Board of Niagara, Niagara Health System, General Motors of Canada Ltd., Brock University, Niagara Regional Police Services, SITEL, the City of St. Catharines, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Algoma Central Corporation, and TRW Canada Ltd. There have been a number of major projects started or planned for the area, including a large parking garage, a health care complex, a performing arts centre, an arena, and a shopping centre. The city’s unemployment rate tends to sit around 6.5%, which is similar to the national rate.
Transportation
The St. Catharines Transit Commission operates public transit buses in the city and into the community of Thorold. The commission services about 25 routes with its fleet of over 60 vehicles and provides accessible service even for those with mobility issues or baby strollers. The Downtown Terminal is served not only by the St. Catharines Transit Commission, but also Greyhound and Coach Canada long-distance bus services to communities such as Hamilton, London, and Toronto.Residents can also travel via GO Transit (bus), VIA Rail and Amtrack (train), and the St. Catharines/Niagara District Airport.
Schools
The District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic District School Board operate elementary and secondary schools in the city. Schools in the city include Pine Grove Elementary, Gracefield Elementary, Carleton Elementary, Lockview Elementary, Ferndale Elementary, Eden High School, Laura Secord Secondary School, St. Catharines Collegiate Secondary School, Mother Teresa School, St. Alfred School, Assumption School, Denis Morris Catholic High School, and St. Francis Catholic Secondary School. Residents can also choose from private school options. St. Catharines’ post-secondary options include Brock University, McMaster University (satellite campus), the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology (St. Catharines campus), and Trillium College (local campus).
Family Life
Montebello Park in downtown St. Catharines was designed in 1887 by one of the men who helped design New York City’s Central Park. The park features a playground, a covered stage, an extensive rose garden, a pavilion, benches, restrooms, walking paths, and grassy areas perfect for lounging or picnicking. It is a popular spot for weddings, festivals, and other events. The St. Catharines Museum features exhibitions on the city’s history and culture. Tools, machinery, clothing, photographs, art, and historical records are just some of the artifacts on display at the museum. A variety of programs and events are held there throughout the year, and visitors can take home a souvenir from the onsite gift shop.
