If you don’t leave the residence after this time, your landlord can charge double rent or even evict you. In buildings with more than three families, the landlord needs to provide smoke detectors in the unit. However, if you live in a smaller home — like a free-standing house, duplex or triplex — you will need to install the smoke detectors yourself.
