Former Resident

I had a generally okay experience at 98 Apartments, but my move-out experience was frustrating.
I declined the express move-out option and was sent a list of things to clean. I followed the list and cleaned the apartment myself. I’ll be fair: I apparently did not clean everything to their standards, so I am not claiming the $150 cleaning charge was illegal or completely impossible to justify.
My complaint is with the process and communication. If residents are expected to clean to a specific standard, there should be someone available to inspect the work or give clear feedback before charging a fee. In my case, the person who handles this was on vacation, so no one was present to check my work. After I spent the time cleaning, I was still charged $150.
What bothered me most was that the process made me feel like I had two bad options: pay for express move-out, or clean myself and still risk being charged because the standards are subjective and not checked in person. I was also told someone would reach out about possibly waiving the fee, but that follow-up did not happen as promised.
Overall, the apartment itself was fine, but the move-out process was more complicated and poorly communicated than it needed to be. My issue is not that they have move-out standards. My issue is that they made me clean, gave limited support or inspection availability, and then charged me anyway.
