I've lived in my house since August and for the most part have enjoyed it. The house is old (so it comes with the typical old house features, i.e. creaking, leaking, and expensive utilities), but is spacious and has been a good space for my friends and I to live in. The backyard is nice as it gives us a space to enjoy the outside with some privacy. The major problem has been the squirrels. For almost half a year I've been living with squirrels in my basement and in my walls. At first it was just a walnut here or there, but it quickly escalated to scampering in all the walls of the house, loud chirping at all times of the day, and at its worst there have been squirrels in our living spaces (running through the kitchen, living room, and my bedroom). It is a constant stressor as the noises are quite jarring and wake me up before dawn frequently. I understand that this is a difficult problem to resolve, but I don't feel that the solutions implemented have been effective or thoroughly thought out. Squirrels are too big for rat traps, and trimming trees doesn't do much when they are ground squirrels. I had hoped that a few different strategies would be used but there has only been repeated attempts at the same failed strategies. Overall, however, I can't be too upset as the space is nice and the rent is cheap.
