I've had the pleasure of living in my apartment for a little less than a year. I love living here. The first time I walked into the building, I saw our eclectic nature of Hyattsville/DC culture imprinted throughout the building: Kids from different cultural backgrounds playing outside; Elders who, despite having diverse backgrounds, immediately find a common language of courtesy and joy in sharing space here; smells of Central American, Caribbean, African, and Asian cuisine flowing through our hallways. There's so much respect for neighbors and vibrancy here. The apartments are constantly filled with light even in the gloomiest of days. Yet despite all the vibrancy that makes this a warm and welcoming place to live in, the always-changing management structures seem to miss this beauty. The previous management invested who-knows-how-many-thousands to chop off trees in the back of the building and construct a tennis court that no one uses (mind you, Northwestern HS has 4 tennis courts available for public use within a 10min walking distance). Our elevators are consistently in disarray--I've seen people in wheelchairs not be able to use the elevator on weekends because they're always out of service. The washing machines are either not well maintained or not built to sustain the daily use of families in a big building. The social experiment of every tenant sharing an equal cost of electricity, water, and gas expenses raises lots of questions, since our AC units seem to work only half of the time...yet our bills are exorbitant with each passing month. The on-site cleaning staff and maintenance crew are amazing. Everyone here loves them. They are not to blame. The biggest issue here is management. Management always misses the big picture in favor of 'upgrading' apartments and increasing rent. They seem to want to keep up with a faux luxury wave that makes cost of living close to impossible here. But it's all at the expense of our actual needs and standard of living.
