I have lived at 409 Laguna since July 1997, more than half of my adult life. I've stayed all those years because the apartment is roomy and charming (Edwardian moldings, large windows, built-in book shelves and a thoughtfully designed floor plan). It’s relatively quiet in my place because my windows face an alley with sparse traffic. My neighbors are friendly and kind, and all in all, the building is tranquil.
Another reason i haven’t moved is that the location is ideal. The neighborhood is transit rich and I can be nearly anywhere within minutes. My building is near the civic, cultural, theatre and performing and visual arts communities. The neighborhood commercial strip is bustling with a wide array of shopping, dining and personal services. And there are three parks within three blocks.
And then, naturally, I’ve stayed because the building is rent controlled. Now retired, my rent is affordable for someone like me with few financial resources due to a disability and some serious health challenges during my working years. And I have experienced no pressure from the landlord to leave in order to raise the rent to market rate for a new tenant. I can’t say how much I appreciate that, because many landlords would try to drive long term residents out.
Our property manager is excellent and the owner has made many improvements recently. I am quite happy here!
