Winnipeg is the capitalcity of Manitoba. The city got its name from Lake Winnipeg but it also carries the nickname “Winterpeg” due to its cold climate. The city is largely multicultural and has a rich history stretching back hundreds of years. The province as a whole is committed to celebrating diversity, and many immigrants reside in the capital. The city enjoys a stable economy,whichis one of the fastest growing economies out of all major cities in Canada. Another interesting fact about Winnipeg is that it is home to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, which is Canada’s oldest ballet company.
Real Estate Market Overview
The real estate market in Winnipeg has been quite stable as of late. The city is enjoying a low unemployment rate and a good amount of population growth,both of which arecontributingto the stable market. However,the market in Winnipeg is feeling the influenceand impact from changes in other markets in the country, such as Vancouver and Toronto. The recent mortgage ruleshavebeen put in place to regulate these other markets, and encourage migration to other cities, such as Winnipeg.As a result, prices will most likely decrease, in order to encourage sales.
Rental Market
The rental market is growing more favourable in Winnipeg, as prices have been staying constant and properties are easier to acquire after the new mortgage rules took effect. Many new developments are taking place in the downtown area of the city, close to the amenities it offers. Condominium prices have been quite constant, but newly built condominiums are popular in the city, and many sell for a higher price than what they are listed for. There has been a lot of new construction of rental units in the city, but this wave of construction is already starting to slow down.
Employment
The largest employment sectors in the city are the manufacturing, health and trade sectors. Winnipeg has an unemployment rate of 6%, which is lower than the national unemployment rate. The city has a large ready and able workforce, andthelarge population of immigrants of working age are a large contributor to this. However, the average weekly earnings in the province are lower than the national average. The province has many resources for peopleseeking employment to help them in their job search. There are two Employment Manitoba offices in Winnipeg,whichcan provide information and resources to job seekers.
Transportation
There are many ways to get around in Winnipeg. The city has a bus system, which is run by Winnipeg Transit. Cycling is another way to get around, andthe Manitoba Cycling Association provides cyclists with maps of cycling routes. Rollerblading is also popular in Winnipeg, and there are many areas of the city that permit this, but rollerblading on the street is prohibited. Walking is always a great option as well and the city encourages its residents to walk to their destinations. For national and international travel, the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is located in the city, withshuttle services available to and from the airport.
Schools
There are 6 English school divisions in the city of Winnipeg: Louis Riel School Division, Pembina Trails School Division, River East Transcona School Division, St. James – Assiniboia School Division, Seven Oaks School Division and Winnipeg School Division. There is also a French language school division called Division scolairefranco-manitobaine. As for post-secondary education, there are four universities in Winnipeg,among which we count the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg. There are also four different colleges in the city,includingBooth University College and Red River College.
Family Life
Winnipeg is a great place for families and it has plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. The cityis home tothe Winnipeg Jets(a National Hockey League team), and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the city’s Canadian Football League team. A few other fun options for family fun include the Arctic Glacier Winter Park, Assiniboine Park & Zoo, and Lasertopia. When the kids are out of school in the summer, the city has a plethora of summer camps that children can enroll in, with many varied programs forchildren tochoose based on what they enjoy.
