Nothing makes your home look more barren than a large patch of empty wall. While you may be tempted to simply hang a random painting or two, perhaps that isn’t your style. Or maybe you’d rather put that empty space to good use. Fortunately, there are many ways you can do just that, so if you need inspiration, read on!

Install Shelves

The easiest way to maximize your wall space is to install shelves. Whether you chose to buy pre-made ones, or you build them as a DIY project, their uses are endless. Shelves are very versatile, and you can even use them as a decorative centerpiece, by installing them at different heights, or even floating shelves. They also work well in pretty much every room in your house, and will take up less space than cupboards or cabinets.

Install Wall Racks and Hooks

Like shelving units, wall racks and hooks are another great way to both put bare walls to good use, as well as decorate your home. You can also use them for more than just hanging up coats and umbrellas in the hallway. Colorful racks will give your living room and kitchen a lively look, while stainless steel or plastic racks will help you store your bathroom items in a tidy and organized way. You can also maximize their use by adding S-hooks to hang lighter items.

Knit Hanging Baskets

Knitted hanging baskets are a beginner friendly DIY project that will make your home look more cozy, as well as help store items. There are several patterns you can use, yet even a rope or a thick piece of string can be woven into a hanger for plant pots or baskets. They work best along windows, hanging from curtain rails, or even from tension rods. And because they’re made out of textile, they can pack up small, meaning they won’t take up space in case you no longer need them, or need to move house.

Use the Top of Furniture and Appliances

One of the most common yet easily overlooked dead spaces in your home is the top of tall furniture, or even appliances, such as the fridge. Such spaces are a bit awkward to reach, as they often require a chair or even a ladder, yet this is precisely why they’re so great for storage. You can use them for items that you don’t often use, such as tools, traveling or camping gear, or even clothes that you’re unlikely to wear this season. Instead of cardboard boxes, you can even use wooden or painted ones, to combine beauty and functionality.

Hang Small Items on Pegboards

Pegboards are another versatile way to store items on your wall. They can be made out of several materials, such as metal, hardboard, perforated wood, and even cork, and they are covered in pre-drilled holes that can be used with either pegs or hooks. Pegboards are mostly useful for storing small or light items, from jewelry, to cooking or gardening utensils, and, depending on the material they’re made from, they can be placed both indoors and outdoors.

Use Slanted Shelves

Slanted shelves are an excellent choice for storing items vertically, while also making the most of a limited space. They are easy to make, and can be used for any item that doesn’t need to be kept on a flat surface. You can use them in the kitchen, to store spice shakers, cans and bottles, in the hallway, to store shoes, or in the garage, for tools.

Use Tension Rods

Tension rods are a cheap alternative to shelves, especially if you live in a place where you can’t drill holes in the walls. Most people use them in the showers, but their uses are endless, and any two vertical surfaces in your home that are close enough can be used to install a tension rod. You can use them for hanging clothes, adding more storage space inside tall cabinets and wardrobes, store tools, stack shoes, create dividers in your pantry, as well as create more draining and storage areas around your sink.

Install a Wall Bed

Although this is a more ambitious project, a wall bed will be a great addition to your home, especially if you already have enough storage options, a spare wall, and you need to increase your living space. Also called a Murphy bed, this is a type of bed that is hinged at one end, and can be pulled up against a wall, or even inside a cabinet.

With their increase in popularity, there are many models available on the market, including sideways-mounted beds, or even models that come with tables, shelves, or even sofas. The price for a wall bed typically averages around $1000, and it’s best that you contact a professional if you wish to have one installed in your home.
