At this point, we’re all more than ready to celebrate the end of the year. But in keeping with 2020’s theme, this New Year’s will be slightly different from normal. Instead of parties and galas and get-togethers, we’ll be spending New Year’s Eve at home.
But if we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that humans are resilient and will find ways to make the best of a bad situation. So instead of lamenting one more lost celebration, we’re here with eight great ideas to help you have a fun yet socially distant New Year’s Eve.
Have an Elegant Meal
More often than not, when you attend a New Year’s Eve celebration, it includes a fancy dinner. Instead of going out for your meal this year, why not throw a lavish dinner for your household? Pick some favorite delicacies you normally wouldn’t have at home and treat yourself. Steak, lobster, caviar… whatever you desire. After the year we’ve had, you deserve it!
If you’re not a chef, don’t despair. Plan ahead and order a take-out meal from your favorite restaurant. You’ll get an amazing meal without all the work, and you’ll be supporting a local business.
Take a (Virtual) Trip Around the World
While we celebrate the new year at the stroke of midnight, different time zones mean that celebrations around the world are actually happening all day long. With a little bit of planning, you can spend the whole day watching other countries ring in the new year.
Countries like New Zealand, parts of Russia and Australia are among the first to start celebrating. North America comes in close to the end of the list, so you’ll have plenty of time to “travel” before it’s time to start your own festivities at home.
Since you probably haven’t been out on the town in a while, why not take the opportunity to dress up at least once this year? Break out those fancy clothes and glam it up with your spouse or roommate. Staying home also means you won’t have to deal with the challenges of frigid temperatures and dress codes.
To really get in the spirit, give your home a little glamming up too. Tidy up, set out candles and hang some twinkle lights for a truly magical night.
Host an Online Soirée
Take getting glamorous one step further and host a glam online NYE party. Send out real invites and make sure guests know it’s a black-tie affair. Ask everyone to prepare snacks ahead of time and set up their camera somewhere where there’s room to dance. Just because you can’t be physically together doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate in style!
Go All-in on Game Night
If you always get all dolled up for a big NYE festivity, this is your year to do the opposite. Put on your comfiest PJs, make some hot chocolate and have all your favorite treats on hand. Then get out some classic board games and prepare for a night of pure fun.
Take a Midnight Stroll
What better way to end a less-than-fabulous year than by starting the new one in the great outdoors? Time in nature is something many of us missed in 2020, so starting 2021 outside might just be the best way to make sure the new year is different from the one before.
Stream a Concert
Live music and New Year’s Eve often go hand in hand. If your ideal NYE celebration is a night of live music, opt for the next best thing with a live streaming event. Check out your favorite musicians’ websites to see who has live streaming concerts available. Pick one and get your friends and family on board so you can all watch the show together. It’ll be as close as you can get to enjoying live music with your loved ones right now.
Host a Theme Night
Break the mold and have a non-traditional New Year’s Eve. Pick a theme – Mexican night, outer space, the roaring 20’s – really anything goes. Then throw yourself all in for a surprisingly fun night. Get set up with food, costumes, props and games that go with the theme.
If you want to make it a larger affair, send invites to your friends in advance to give them time to prep their costumes and props. Then join together virtually to have a costume contest and play games. It’ll be a New Year’s Eve to remember!
Even though it may not be what you were hoping for, there are plenty of fun things to do at home for New Year’s Eve.
