Does the glamour and luxury of the roaring ’20s have you dreaming of days gone by? If you love sleek surfaces, lush materials, and striking designs, it’s time to add some Art Deco interior design to your home.

Short for Arts Décoratifs, the Art Deco style embraces bold patterns, rich colors, reflective surfaces, and geometric shapes. Made popular in the 1920s and 30s, this decadent decorating style is making a comeback in response to all of the minimalist interiors of the last decade.

But, finding the line between bold and busy can be tricky, so here are six great tips to help you introduce Art Deco style:

1.      Be Bold

Art Deco is not for the mild-mannered. In fact, it calls for everything to be a little bit over-the-top. Attention-grabbing shapes, luxe finishes, and bold patterns are all staples of the Art Deco movement. From a large-scale pattern on the walls to elaborate furnishings, Art Deco style loves to make a statement.

There’s also no room for frills and fluff in Art Deco interior design. You won’t find any lace, romantic florals, plaid or pretty pastels. But you will find crisp lines, geometric patterns, rich colors and high contrast.

If you’re not sure where to begin, try testing out the Art Deco waters with some high-contrast black and white. Pieces with interesting shapes accentuated by crisp, contrasting trim are always striking.

2.      Go for Glamour

In its heyday, Art Deco style was often associated with the wealthy and glamourous due to its luxurious materials and high-end finishes. Recreate the same elegant look with less-expensive materials that are readily available today.

Materials such as chrome, stainless steel, and glass – which were once considered new and innovative – are now everyday items. Add them to your decor in abundance without breaking the bank. To get the glamour of gold, try polished brass. Or, easily recreate the striking appearance of ebony with black painted wood.

3.      Let Your Home Shine

Reflective materials play a big part in Art Deco style. Whether it’s a full-wall mirror, a chrome table or a gold chandelier, the more shimmer and shine you can incorporate, the better! Even non-reflective surfaces are treated with a high-gloss lacquer finish to get that coveted shine.

Avoid rough or raw materials; instead, create contrast with the use of super-soft and luxurious textiles. Try a glass coffee table paired with a velvet sofa or plush chairs with a highly polished dining table.

4.      Embrace Geometric Shapes

Geometric shapes and patterns are the mainstay of Art Deco design. From interestingly shaped furniture to patterned textiles to intricate inlays, geometric patterns appear throughout an Art Deco interior.

There are lots of fun ways to introduce geometric decor into your own home. Start small with a Greek Key border on a pillow or curtain. Try an octagonal side table or a fantail mirror to add geometric touches that will stand out. Or – if you’re ready to be daring – a bold, geometric-patterned wallpaper will really make a statement.

5.      Show Your Natural Side

With both African and Egyptian influences, animal and jungle motifs bring an exotic touch to the industrial nature of Art Deco style. Include these leaf and animal prints to counterbalance all the hard angles and geometric patterns. The secret is to use these softer accents sparingly, so the look is sophisticated and not tacky.

Add a zebra-print throw to a ’20s-themed bedroom. Or, pair a dramatic, Deco-style mirror with a flowing, leaf-patterned wallpaper for a powerful powder room. If you’re not a fan of animal prints, try stylized animal motif artwork or sculptures instead.

6.      Statement Lighting

Like everything in Art Deco interior design, the lighting is spectacular! And, it’s also a great way to introduce the style in your home without making a huge commitment. With bold, angular shapes and futuristic styles, there are plenty of interesting options to choose from.

Look for dramatic, attention-grabbing chandeliers; angular wall sconces; and oversized, sculptural table lamps. Because the style is seeing a revival, you can find Art-Deco lighting at many modern retailers. But, for true vintage style, search thrift stores and antique shops for fixtures from the ’20s and ’30s.
