While it’s always sad to see summer end, the change in seasons brings beautiful colors and an opportunity for exciting fall decor. If you’re searching for ways to welcome the new season but want something different than the standard wreaths and pumpkins, we’ve got you covered!

This fall, it’s all about grounding. The goal is to create cozy spaces that offer a retreat from hectic days. Think heavyweight materials, lots of layers and texture, and plenty of ways to keep warm.  Now that the nights are getting cooler, here are six of our favorite ways to help take the chill off with fabulous fall decor.

1.      Add a Carpet in Unexpected Places

Cooler weather leads to cold floors. Increase the cozy factor around your house by adding area rugs where you might not expect them. A runner in the kitchen lets you add color without a commitment and will keep your feet warm while you work.

Make your dining room more inviting with a statement rug under the dining table. Look for a low-pile rug that won’t trap crumbs and have fun with patterns or bold colors. In case of a spill, a fun pattern is less likely to show stains than a solid- or pale-colored rug.

2.      Caramel is the Color of Fall

If you’re looking for the perfect fall color to warm up your home decor, caramel is the answer. With so much white-on-white trending right now, it can be a challenge to warm up all those bright and airy spaces.

Fortunately, caramel is a gorgeous hue that goes with everything and instantly warms up a room. And, the best part is, you can find it in natural elements that are perfect for fall. Think warm wood; rich, buttery leather; and copper and terracotta accents to add warmth and help ground any space.

3.      Plenty of Plaid

Plaid is the pattern for fall this year. And, because this tried-and-true classic is available in almost every color combination, you can rest assured that it will work in your home. Plaid pillows and blankets are the quick and easy way to add this seasonal favorite to your decor. Swap out your light, summer prints for your favorite tartan for a crisp, fall look.

Additionally, consider layering a plaid carpet (or two!) over your existing rug to increase coziness. Or, try adding plaid curtains to warm up any room. You can also mix and match your plaids for even more fun. And, use different-colored tartans for placemats, napkins, and runners for a colorful and cozy fall tablescape.

4.      Pick Your Own Decor

Fall is one time of year when home decor items are literally falling at your feet. From colorful branches to pinecones to wheat stalks, the very best fall decor is ready and waiting to be harvested.

Nature’s bounty makes beautiful centerpieces. Combine dried flowers and fall foods such as apples, pumpkins, and pears for a fall-themed display that looks good enough to eat. Wheat stalks are another hot-from-the-field decor item this fall. Add them to your fall vignettes for even more seasonal style.

5.      Don’t Forget Your Outside Spaces

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you have to pack up the patio furniture quite yet. With a little extra layering and warmth, you can give your outdoor spaces a bit more life. Imagine crisp autumn nights curled up by the fire with good company and a favorite beverage or snack.

An outdoor rug will help ground your sitting area and keep the chill off of your toes. Layer warm throws on outdoor chairs and benches; make sure you have one to sit on and one to wrap up in. And, of course, the secret to spending long nights outdoors is the warmth of a fire feature. If you’re a city dweller and bylaws prevent you from having a wood-burning fire, don’t worry. You can find a wide selection of gas and propane fire features that range in size from tabletop models to a full-size fireplace.

Start your home makeover with these fall decorating ideas and welcome the new season in a warm and cozy atmosphere!
