Gone are the days of stuffy dining rooms reserved solely for formal dinner parties. Today’s decorating trends are seeing a shift towards inviting dining rooms that are brimming with style and comfort. But just because your dining room now calls for a little creativity, that doesn’t mean you should make changes without a plan. Take the time to decide on a colour scheme and style before you start making any purchases. By planning ahead, you’ll end up with a much more cohesive look and a room you will love! Here are 5 great design tips to help take your dining room from ordinary to outstanding.

1. Set the Tone with Stylish Seating

Dining room chairs have come a long way. There are so many different styles, colours, and materials to choose from that you could elevate your dining room’s ambiance with chairs alone. (But we don’t recommend you stop there!) To make a big impression, try mixing up chair styles. Consider custom host and hostess chairs that allow you to add colour or patterns without overwhelming the room.

When shopping for dining chairs, it’s important to consider comfort as well as style. Look for a good “two-hour chair,” or one that will remain comfortable throughout a long, leisurely meal. And make sure you take the size of your dining room table into account. Chairs that don’t fit easily under the table make for an awkward room and uncomfortable meals.

2. Make an Impact with a Striking Light Fixture

With all the gorgeous chandeliers available, the dining room is an excellent place to make an impact with a statement light. Since it will be a focal point, your lighting choice should complement the design style of the room. Avoid putting a modern fixture in a traditional room or it may look like you updated your lighting and nothing else.

Scale is important when choosing lighting, especially if you’re picking out a statement piece that will draw attention. The size of your chandelier should be in proportion to the size of your dining table, as well as the size of the room. Keep in mind that fixtures with multiple bulbs can produce a lot of light. Adding a dimmer switch will ensure you always have the right lighting for the activity at hand.

3. Anchor the Room with an Area Rug

Rugs are not traditionally found in dining rooms, but they make a wonderful addition to your dining room décor. An area rug will not only help anchor the room, but it also adds warmth and texture to a space that can sometimes feel a bit cold. The right area rug can also help tie the colours and patterns in the room together.

To determine the correct size for your area rug, measure your dining table and add 2 feet all the way around. This should provide enough space to allow chair legs to remain on the carpet even when someone is sitting at the table. Don’t forget to account for the length of the table leaf if you have one. Otherwise, your carpet will fall short when you host a large group.

4. Make a Statement with Stunning Wallpaper

Dining rooms provide the perfect opportunity to make an impact with wallpaper or a feature wall. Since they generally get used less than other main living areas, you can go bold with colours and patterns without worrying about growing tired of them.

Wallpaper is having a major revival right now, and the available choices are almost endless. From geometric patterns to florals to full wall murals, there are gorgeous designs to suit every style. You can even choose from realistic faux brick or wood patterns to really change the look of your space. If you go with bold wallpaper, keep the rest of your décor simple by limiting the colour palette to one or two colours that complement the pattern.

5. Elevate Your Dining Room with a Colourful Ceiling

If you really want to get creative with your dining room, consider adding some pizzazz to the ceiling. Also known as the “fifth wall,” the ceiling provides a whole new canvas to express your style. Go bold with paint or wallpaper or stay more traditional with the addition of wood beams or architectural detailing.

The great thing about all of these dining room decorating tips is that they make a huge impact but don’t require a big budget. Get creative and try combining these ideas for a gorgeous space that expresses your personal style. And then invite some friends over and show off your fabulous new dining room!
