Did you know that every year has at least one and no more than three Friday the 13ths? Paraskevidekatriaphobia is fear of Friday the 13th, and it has probably impacted the real estate industry more than you’d think.
It is estimated that as much as $900 million is lost in business on Friday the 13th because superstitious people will not fly or do other things they would usually do. Have you had clients avoid or reschedule a closing on this day? We wouldn’t be surprised. In fact, our friends at Point2 Homes conducted a study which revealed that American home buyers avoid closing sales on the 13th of every month.
The number 13 is also frequently considered unlucky when appearing in a property address. Forty percent of agents believe that resistance to the number 13 has resulted in sellers having to lower their asking price. And according to “No. 13: Unlucky/Lucky for Some,” one in 10 people who live at #13 strongly believe that their house has brought them bad luck.
The Daily Mail reports that there has been a 34% drop in the number of houses coming on the market with 13 in the address over the last decade – but allow that that figure could be distorted by the fact that 28% of streets don’t even have a #13. In fact, some councils in England have banned the dreaded number all together.
And you might already know that many hospitals, hotels and apartment buildings don’t have a 13th floor. When asked why a new Manhattan skyscraper would be built without a 13th floor, the developer replied, “I’m not particularly superstitious myself, but not having a 13th floor is a no-brainer. You don’t want to preclude anyone, a buyer who happens to be superstitious. It boils down to that.”
Do you agree?
Just for fun!
Here’s a little trivia to help you impress your buyers, sellers and coworkers today. Famous people who were born on Friday the 13th include:
Steve Buscemi – December 13, 1957
Butch Cassidy – April 13, 1866
Fidel Castro – August 13, 1926
Alfred Hitchcock – August 13, 1899
Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen – June 13, 1986
Margaret Thatcher – October 13, 1923
P.S. Today is extra special because it is both Friday the 13th AND a full moon, a coincidence that won’t occur again until 2049. Make sure to celebrate (or take precautions) accordingly!
