The Corpus Christi metropolitan area covers Aransas, Nueces, and San Patricio counties and in 2013 had an estimated population of 442,600.

Lovingly known as the Sparkling City by the Sea, Corpus Christi has a lot of family attractions and places to visit, not least the 113 miles of beaches in the area.

Approximately eight million people visit the Corpus Christi area annually, and the successful tourism industry has a knock-on effect for other businesses as well.

The petrochemicals industry is also important here, and the city has the fifth largest port in the U.S.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle and Culture

There are many strands to Corpus Christi’s cultural life. The Large Latino/Hispanic community adds a great deal, not least during Hispanic Heritage month which runs from September 15 – October 15. The oil industry workers and the military personnel who work on the defense bases also add to the city’s character. Being in Texas, it naturally has the cowboy vibe, and the rodeo is a big event here.

The surfing crowd gather on Mustang Island and places on Padre Island such as Whitecap Beach and J. P. Luby Surf Park. For people who prefer quieter activities there is a lot of nature in these parts, including rare turtles, and of course plenty of opportunity just to hang out on the beach. Locals also enjoy relaxing at nearby Lake Corpus Christi Park where fishing and boating are popular.

Lifestyle

Entertainment and Tourism

Like the Lone Star State itself, the USS Lexington aircraft carrier has a long history regarding war and national security. After long periods of service, it became too expensive to run and so was made into a museum, moored just north of the city center. It is supported completely by donations and is it makes a great outing for anybody interested in history and military hardware.

The museum district, near to the Lexington, has attractions such as the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History and the South Texas Institute for the Arts. The Texas State Aquarium aims not only to preserve marine wildlife but also to educate citizens with exhibits, presentations, and educational programs. The South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center was founded in 1987 and makes a wonderful excursion.

Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods

Corpus Christi can be said to have about a dozen suburbs and almost as many neighborhoods. It can also be broadly divided into four sectors: Central City, South Side, Southwest and Northwest.

Neighborhoods

Central City

The Central City area of Corus Christi covers a central part of the city from the sea to the airport, plus, technically speaking, the North Beach section which includes the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington. It has many good shopping opportunities. It is said to be the most walkable neighborhood in Corpus Christi but it doesn’t have too many bike lanes. It is reckoned to have almost 100,000 residents.

South Side

The Southside of Corpus Christi is some respects the city’s business district. There are also many restaurants and retail opportunities here. For something more relaxing, the 180-acre South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center features many plants from the local area, plus more than 3,000 orchids, and a nature trail where many animals can be seen.

Southwest

The southwest sector of Corpus Christi is more suburban and rural in nature, with many of its properties being large ranches. The southern extremity of this area at Chapman Ranch was marked out for a controversial wind farm development.

Northwest

The northwest section of the city can be said to lie between the central area and Calallen further to the west. It includes the city’s airport in its southernmost part. The range of properties here includes bungalows at good prices.

Real Estate Market

In the last couple of decades, Corpus Christi has witnessed increases in its population, mainly as a result of growth in the Hispanic/Latino community. Because this hasn’t been accompanied by comparable increases in inventory, real estate prices have been rapidly getting higher. A number of people from Corpus Christi who had moved away are now returning to take advantage of the economy here.

Some neighborhoods that have been tipped as good places to move to are Central City, which is near to all the services you might want, and Ingleside and Calallen for families. For investors, several places are recommended that can bring in money from tourists visiting the area—Mustang-Padre Island is a good option and the South Side might also be considered.

  • Median Home Price: $187,000

Economic Overview & Outlook

2018 was a good year for Texas—it was named the best US state in which to do business, and not for the first time. The unemployment rate in Corpus Christ had fallen to 4.5% by May 2018, which was quite a drop from previous years. The increase in the employment market has been witnessed in the surrounding areas as well, for example in the mining and construction industries.

The biggest employer in Corpus Christi is the National Air Station Corpus Christi which has more than 6,000 civilians on its payroll. Tourism and the oil and petrochemicals industry continue to make a big contribution to the economy. If the state of Texas continues to flourish as it has been recently, it will be good news for the people of Corpus Christi.
