Puerto Aventuras is home to a population of approximately 6,000 people and is located in the Quintana Roo state in southeastern Mexico. Situated next to the Caribbean Sea, the city covers about three square kilometres near the communities of Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Xpu Ha, and Chacalal.
The community is relatively new, having been built mostly over the course of the last 20 years or so, and was designed specifically as a gated subdivision area. Ex-pats make up a decent portion of the population in Puerto Aventuras, with some living here year-round and others only a part of the time. Puerto Aventuras is also a popular vacation spot, providing plenty of accommodations, recreational activities, and local attractions.
Compared to nearby local cities such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Puerto Aventuras offers a more relaxed atmosphere, but still has plenty to keep residents busy. English and Spanish are spoken here, and the city’s proximity to Highway 307 provides easy access to nearby communities. The easiest way to reach Puerto Aventuras is by flying into Cancun and bussing or shuttling to the community.

The Puerto Aventuras Golf & Racquet Club offers a 9-hole golf course, as well as tennis courts. The club has an onsite pro shop, equipment rentals, tennis lessons, and golf lessons. The course, which was developed in 1991, is surrounded by palm trees, bougainvillea, and other tropical trees and plants, which are home to a variety of wildlife such as birds, deer, and iguanas. The National Museum of Underwater Archeology (CEDAM Museum) is a nautical museum featuring displays of coins and other artifacts that have been recovered from sunken 18th-century ships in the area. Objects include military items (cannon balls, cannons), old diving equipment, statues, pottery, and jewelry. Information about the various vessels and the people who collected the artifacts is also displayed.
Dolphin Discovery Puerto Aventuras provides visitors with the opportunity to swim with dolphins in a safe environment. Various dolphin swim packages are available at a range of prices, and many include photos that capture the experience. People of all ages can participate in these activities, and trained professionals ensure safety, including the use of lifejackets and safe interactions with the animals. Visitors also learn about dolphins, including what they eat, how they live in the wild, and how they are trained to perform with humans. The centre also has other wildlife, such as manatees and sea lions, some of which can be fed by visitors.
Other activities in the community include snorkeling, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, playing sports, scuba diving, birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and taking day trips to historical sites to see ruins and other cultural monuments.
Much like other communities in Quintana Roo, Puerto Aventuras’ economy is largely based on the tourism industry. The community has restaurants, shops, tourist attractions, accommodations, and other service-based businesses that cater to tourists, but also benefit permanent and part-time residents.
Many of the ex-pats who live here are retired, but some work remotely from the community using technology and local internet and phone connections. Real estate is a major economic contributor as well, with plenty of investment properties being bought, sold, and rented on a regular basis. The demand for real estate also increases the need for construction, making that industry another important one in the community. Other economic enterprises include fishing and some agriculture.
The community is also the only one in the area to have a marina, which is important for sport fishing companies. Similar to the state’s overall unemployment rate, Puerto Aventuras’ rate is around 3%.
The main sections of Playacar are Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 is located along the southern section of the community, along the shore. Phase 1 is more of a residential section with houses and fewer hotels than Phase 2 has. Secluded beaches and villas, various preserved Mayan ruins, a few bars and restaurants, spas, kiteboarding outfitters, diving outfitters, resorts and hotels, a few shops, a few service providers, and bed and breakfast operations are all found in Phase 1.
The larger Phase 2, located along the northern section of the community, was built around the Hard Rock Golf Course and features the large golf course, a small shopping area, a bird aviary park, residential areas, hotels and resorts, tour outfitters, shops, service providers, restaurants/bars/cafes, an art museum, and bed and breakfast operations.
Puerto Aventuras has two large sections. The first section is located northwest of Highway 307 and includes residential areas, schools, service providers, accommodations, restaurants, shops, a shopping mall, churches, pharmacies, supermarkets, a recreation complex with multiple sports fields, a veterinarian office, a fire hall, a hospital, and tourist attractions. Restaurants in this section include Mexican, Italian, American, and there are also cafes. This section is surrounded by heavily forested areas.
The second section is located southeast of Highway 307, along the coast of the Caribbean Sea. This section includes residential areas, accommodations, a golf course, service providers, restaurants, shops, tour outfitters, spas, beach areas, tourist attractions, the marina, a museum, supermarkets, a post office, tennis courts, parks, and schools.
Restaurant options in this section include cafes, chain restaurants, bars/lounges, fine dining, and American, Mexican, and Japanese cuisine. The northern portion of this section is heavily forested, while the southern portion is a sandy beach area.
Schools in Puerto Aventuras include Jardin De Niños Miguel Miramón, Esc. Sec. Gral. José Antonio Tzuc Esparza, Esc. Miguel Ortega, Escuela Luis Dolado Colosio, Colegio Puerto Aventuras, and Transformar Educando A.C. School options in nearby communities include Jardin De Niños Malintzin, Tele Secundarua José Vasconcelos, and International School Playa del Carmen.
