Located on the northern side of the Dominican Republic, Sosúa is a resort town known for bringing in water enthusiasts and vacationers. There are approximately 50,000 people living within the 106.91 square miles of the city. Sosúa is approximately 15 miles to the east of San Felipe de Puerto Plata, the capital of the province.

While the leader at the time offered to bring in 100,000 Jewish refugees, only 800 people from Germany and Austria were able to obtain visas. Descendants still live in Sosúa where they maintain a synagogue and museum as well as a dairy and cheese factory.

Lows during the year will dip into the 60’s. Rainfall is heaviest in November and December when Sosúa receives nearly one-third of its annual rainfall. Sosúa’s total average rainfall is approximately 59 inches per year.

Classes in Sosúa and throughout the Dominican Republic are mostly taught in Spanish. Education and schooling is mandatory for children between the ages of 7 and 14. There are 10 public schools and 4 private schools located in Sosúa.
