Located on the northern side of the Dominican Republic, Sosúa is a resort town known for bringing in water enthusiasts and vacationers. There are approximately 50,000 people living within the 106.91 square miles of the city. Sosúa is approximately 15 miles to the east of San Felipe de Puerto Plata, the capital of the province.

The history of Sosúa is quite unique compared to most parts of the Caribbean and Central America. The area grew when German Jews escaping Nazi Germany settled into this region of the Dominican Republic. While the leader at the time offered to bring in 100,000 Jewish refugees, only 800 people from Germany and Austria were able to obtain visas. Descendants still live in Sosúa where they maintain a synagogue and museum as well as a dairy and cheese factory.

Sosúa enjoys a tropical climate and features lots of vegetation amid its rolling hills. Temperatures average in the 80s to low-90s over the year with the hottest months being June through October. Lows during the year will dip into the 60’s. Rainfall is heaviest in November and December when Sosúa receives nearly one-third of its annual rainfall. Sosúa’s total average rainfall is approximately 59 inches per year.

Classes in Sosúa and throughout the Dominican Republic are mostly taught in Spanish. Education and schooling is mandatory for children between the ages of 7 and 14. There are 10 public schools and 4 private schools located in Sosúa. What started as just 12 students in the late-1980’s, the International School of Sosúa now educates over 200 students from dozens of countries with ages ranging from 1 to 18 years of age and is considered an excellent option for private schooling.
