SWIFT CURRENT, SASKATCHEWAN

Located in southwest Saskatchewan, Swift Current is a small city of just over fifteen thousand people.

It sits on the TransCanada Highway 110 miles west of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and 135 miles east of Medicine Hat, Alberta.

The city began as Swift Current Creek, a waterway which empties into the South Saskatchewan River. It was a Cree aboriginal camp for hundreds of years.

In the 1800’s fur traders found the creek as they headed west.

It was established as a settlement in 1882 when the Canadian Pacific Railroad line extended this far.

Swift Current became a major military base because it was so close to Battleford.

Its status changed from hamlet to village in 1904.

By 1907, the population had grown to five hundred and fifty. In 1914, it became a city.

Swift Current’s humid continental climate means that winters are long, dry and cold. Summers are short, warm and wet. Average January temperatures are almost 14 °F. July is the warmest month.Temperatures average 65 °F. February, the driest month, receives half an inch of rain/snow. June, the wettest month averages almost three inches of rain. Swift Current’s annual precipitation is only about fifteen and a half inches. Swift Current’s elevation is higher than Regina’s. Yet its winters are milder because Chinook winds bring brief periods of unseasonably warm weather.

Swift Current is home to the province’s oldest still-operating theatre. It was built in 1912. Later it was converted to a vaudeville theater for travelling companies. Next it became a movie theater. In the 1980’s the Lyric Theatre became a bar and nightclub. A group purchased the building in 2005 and is renovating it to preserve this heritage. It plans to stage cultural events, host an artist-in-residence, and rent it for special events like the mock Chautauqua held every July.
Built in 1903, The Imperial Hotel is the longest running business in Swift Current. Also known as “the Big Eye”, tourists visit this landmark to take photos of the large eye painted on the side. Besides the theater, art gallery and library, Swift Current hostsWindscape Kite Festival. A local movie production company called Dead Prairies is working on its second movie called “Swift Nightmares”- casting locals in the roles!. As well as ice hockey and lacrosse, Swift Current has golf courses and a motocross club. In 2016, the city hosted theWorld Women's Curling Championship. Watersports also occur on nearby Diefenbaker Lake.

There is a high demand for apartments, single-family houses, condominiums and geared-to-income housing complexes. Within the past six years, Swift Current has issued more building permits than it did for the previous quarter century. In 2015, there was a record-setting $84 million in construction in the city. Swift Current has the seventh highest number of properties among cities in Saskatchewan. The number of houses available is constantly falling. Demand is exceeding supply.

The economy of Swift Current in the early days was railway-related construction. Ranchers moved in and raised sheep and cattle, and later bison farms cropped up. Bison bones were used to manufacture fertilizer. Other manufacturing included bone china and sugar refinery. Recently there has been an increase in oil and gas industry around Swift Current. Drilling is on the rise and businesses directly and indirectly related to fossil fuels have thrived.
Agribusinesses in Swift Current are also doing well thanks to strong beef prices and high crop yields. Saskatchewan has the title “Canada’s bread basket” because 95% of the province’s economy is directly or indirectly related to farming - particularly wheat. The economy depends on grains, livestock, oil and gas, potash, uranium, and wood.
The city’s economy presently is based on agribusiness, manufacturing, oil and gas, tourism and service industries. The city is in a growth mode. The present population of the area is slightly more than 17,500 and is expected to reach 25,000 by the year 2025. The median age of Swift Current’s present population is forty-two.
