The city is composed of two sister cities, Vaudreuil and Dorion.

The cities were merged into one in the year of 1994.

The name changed to Vaudreuil-Dorion and the city became what it is today.

The city can be considered to be composed of two areas.

One is small and located toward the west.

The other area is the main part of the city and located toward the east beside Lac des Deux Montagnes.
