Founded in 1829 by Thomas McKay, builder of the Rideau Canal lock system, he chose to name this piece of heaven after his home city in Scotland. In the present day, this community boasts a lively urban core surrounded by peaceful parks and heritage buildings. Within minutes, you can walk from a lively city to a peaceful and serene park with views of the Ottawa River. New Edinburgh is a unique area that is second to none in Ottawa.
There is a lively and exciting feel to New Edinburgh. Along the main strip you can easily walk around and enjoy the various eclectic shops, pubs and coffee houses. Local residents operate most of the businesses and as such, you can easily feel the pride and passion that surrounds this unique community. Although there is the true urban feel to the main centre of this neighbourhood, if you head out towards Stanley Park and the Ottawa River, you begin to feel a shift in the atmosphere. The beautiful natural surroundings create a peaceful and serene environment. You can hear children laughing and playing in the distance as the birds sing overhead. Within minutes you can walk from the trendy, urban core to the relaxing and breath-taking views of the Ottawa River. This transition creates a very unique feel to the neighbourhood. Once you feel the positive vibe that New Edinburgh has to offer, you will never want to leave.
The first stop of your day should always be the amazing Scone Witch or the incredibly popular Fraser Café. Actually, you should probably always go to both of these as they offer some of the finest food you will ever have the pleasure of tasting.
Once you are done with breakfast, you can browse through a few of the local shops before heading out to Stanley Park, where you and your family will be able to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Ottawa River. If you are feeling particularly energetic, there is always the incredible walking tour of the historic New Edinburgh. This walk will most certainly be one of your more fascinating strolls along the streets of your community.
After all the walking, you will probably want to grab a delicious pint of locally brewed beer from the Clocktower Brew Pub or the New Edinburgh Pub. Now that you are refreshed, why not grab a bite to eat at the unique El Meson, which specialises in Spanish and Portuguese inspired cuisines. Alternatively, you can hit up Arturo’s Market for some fresh pasta. No matter where you decide to go, you will have amazing food and a memorable experience in New Edinburgh. Outside of your typical day, one of Ottawa’s best festivals takes place in Stanley Park. This is of course the Ottawa Lumiere Festival, which is quite literally a celebration of light. You will be awed by the handcrafted lanterns and inspired by the music. This event usually takes place in August so mark you calendar, as it will be an experience of a lifetime. Whether you are looking for a relaxed walk through the park or a nice drink on the patio, you will always love and appreciate your life whilst living in New Edinburgh.
Outside of the main strip, you will find a nice mix of luxurious homes and unique town houses. Typically there is plenty of space and as such, these homes are ideal for raising your family.
