Lunenburg, Nova Scotia has a population of over 2,300 people and is located on the province’s South Shore.

The city is on the western side of Mahone Bay off of the Atlantic Ocean.



The city covers 4.01 square kilometers.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, and the city centre is also a National Historic Site of Canada due to the city’s long history of both First Nations and British settler habitation.

Economic Overview

The biggest industry in Lunenburg is tourism, as thousands of people visit the city each year, and there is plenty of accommodation and many restaurants and attractions to keep them busy. Another large contributor to the local economy is the three active shipyards, which act as shipping ports and shipbuilding centres. Other types of businesses also operate in the city, including manufacturing plants.
The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg has an economic development department that offers programs, resources, and grants to help local businesses and the economy.

Entertainment and Tourism

Lunenburg is full of history, with unique architecture and stories to tell. The Bluenose II is a sailing ship that can be explored during visiting hours when it is docked at Lunenburg. A short walk from the Bluenose II is the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, which has a large aquarium, floating vessels, and a number of exhibits that share the history of Lunenburg and what life at sea was like.

Local shops sell art and gifts, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, many catering specifically to seafood lovers. The city hosts a street festival and art walk, as well as a folk art festival each year. Most parts of Lunenburg are easily accessible by walking, and provide beautiful scenery, even during the rush hour!

The city is divided in three main areas: the Center, the East and the West.

The center

The central section of Lunenburg features the city’s Town Hall, a number of restaurants and retail shops, and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. The northern area of this section is mostly residential with very few parks or greenspaces.

The eastern section of Lunenburg is predominantly residential with very few businesses located in the area.

West

Lunenburg’s western section has a mix of residential and commercial areas, as well as the Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital. There are a number of bed and breakfast establishments, as well as dining options. There are a couple of parks/greenspaces, and in the southern area is the Bluenose Golf Club.
