CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

Nestled on the Avalon Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland, Conception Bay South is an incredibly desirable place to live and sits just 20 km from Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital, St. John’s.

The town, also referred to as C.B.S., is located on the coast and covers an area of 58.27 sq. km.

The area has a growing population of 24,848, which makes it the province’s second largest population centre after St. John’s, and is made up of 98.2% whites and 1.6% First Nations.

English is the primary language spoken.

The town was established in 1973 when a number of communities were amalgamated.

Early English and Irish settlers were attracted to the coastline due to the fertile land, temperate climate, and access to firewood.

The railway was built in the 1830s and formed an easy link to St. John’s to transport crops, cattle, and other products.

Conception Bay South enjoys a humid continental climate, which brings warm summers peaking around the low 20s, and fairly cold winters with temperatures dipping to around -5°C in January and February.

Fishing, for example lobster trapping, is a prominent industry due to the town’s positioning by the ocean.

The town has excellent transport and highway links to the province’s capital, and it’s just a short drive to major healthcare facilities, amenities, prime commercial land, and the port area.

The closest airport is St. John’s International Airport, approximately 30km from C.B.S., and the harbour in Long Pond brings a number of cruise ship visitors in the summer.
