No matter where you choose to live in Vancouver, British Columbia, you have the privilege of living in one of the world’s most desirable cities. West End, on the downtown peninsula in Vancouver, is a neighbourhood offering the pinnacle of quality living in a world-class city.

Known for its diversity, incredible views, impeccable planning, and proximity to work and play, West End is a beacon calling out to all people looking for a home in Vancouver. One visit to the area will leave no doubt as to why this community is one of the hottest not only in Vancouver but the entire world.

Bordered by the ocean, Stanley Park and Downtown, West End truly exemplifies that realtor standby phrase, “close to everything.” The community is so well-planned that it even won an award from The Canadian Institute of Planners in 2015 as they named it one of their Great Places in Canada.

The jury of professional planners considered things like the state of local business, traffic calming efforts, ability to walk and bike, public parks, street furniture, art, and much more. A lot of places like to say they’re the best; West End has the hardware to back it up. The housing in the area is mainly high density, so for those who enjoy life in apartments or condos, this is the place to be.

Entertainment, Restaurants, Cafes

The entertainment available to people living in West End is extensive and probably deserving of an entire article in itself. With such quick access to Downtown, this entire area has more restaurants, bars, shopping, and clubs than you could ever dream of. English Bay Beach is a popular destination for relaxing by the ocean. It includes an off-leash area for dog owners, as well as events year round including the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim for those who can handle some cold water after a night of ringing in the New Year.

There is also the Celebration of Light, a summer fireworks festival featuring a competition between some of the best fireworks displays from around the world. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, try renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. On any given day you will find plenty of Vancouverites biking or walking along the Seawall. This is a fantastic way to enjoy the natural beauty of Vancouver as well as to get around the downtown peninsula.

Practical and scenic – the perfect combination! Denman Street is the place to go for good eats including Nook, a highly rated Italian restaurant, Espana Restaurant, and Kingyo. Davie Street and Robson Street are popular shopping destinations in the city with well-known international brands as well as unique, local shops.

Entertainment and Tourism

Real Estate

High density housing is king in West End. If you’re searching for an apartment or condo that puts you close to Downtown as well as the hottest entertainment in the city then this is the area for you. The real estate market in Vancouver is very competitive, especially in West End. If you’re looking for a home in the community be prepared for high prices and active bidders. That’s not meant to be discouraging. The prices and high activity in the real estate market reflect a community that is unmatched in its amenities and quality of life. If you’re looking for a detached, single-family home then you may have to look outside of West End.

As you go further east in the city, single-family homes become more and more prevalent. Prices are also lower as you move away from the downtown peninsula and may be more manageable for some budgets. As with any real estate purchase in any city, doing your research is key to finding the perfect place to call home.

Pollution/ Noise

Over the years, West End has seen increased focus on traffic calming and promotion of walking. As a result, traffic is quite reasonable considering it is a downtown community. Noise will always be present in such an active community but should not be a major nuisance. Some events like the fireworks displays will create more noise than usual but come with the added benefit of world class entertainment right at your doorstep.

Crime Rate

Vancouver’s crime rate is in line with the rest of Canada. West End has several residents groups that work to keep the neighbourhood safe and they have successfully pushed out some less-than-welcome criminal elements making the community one of the safer and more welcoming in Vancouver.

West End isn’t just for the young professional. Young families make up a large portion of the population in the area and there are schools right within the community to serve the children living there. There’s Lord Robert Elementary School for the younger children while older kids will make their way to King George Secondary. With West End being so accommodating to walkers and cyclists, getting to school should be quick and convenient.

Public Transportation

Vancouver has a very robust public transit system. For those working downtown, a quick bus ride should be all that’s needed to get to the office. Bus stops are common throughout the area and planning your route is easy with the TransLink Trip Planner. For trips further away from the downtown peninsula, the Skytrain is your best bet. It offers quick access to some of the other Vancouver communities as well as surrounding cities like Burnaby, Surrey, and Coquitlam. And, as mentioned, walking and cycling in West End is very easy. Being so close to Downtown, it’s not uncommon for people to choose the power of their own two legs over public transit.

Family Life

What more is there to say? Raising your family in a world-class city is one thing… Giving your children the chance to grow up in the heart of that city is something most parents dream of providing for their family. What child wouldn’t love living in a diverse, cultured neighbourhood full of non-stop excitement and entertainment? The only concern with raising a family in West End is how to convince the kids to leave home once they become adults!
