NEIGHBOURHOOD GUIDE
SUNSET, VANCOUVER

Easily winning the prize for Vancouver, British Columbia's most exotic neighbourhood, Sunset offers a luscious slice of South Asian life, with all its myriad colours, cultures, sights and sounds. There’s an annual Vaisakhi Parade celebrating the Sikh New Year, a Bollywood-worthy flash mob street dance for Canada Day, and an annual 5-day Diwali Festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and all lovers of fabulous festivals. With all this and so much more, life in Sunset is always exotic and exciting!

From E. 41st, Sunset slopes down to the bank of the Fraser River. It is bordered by Ontario Street on the west, and the busy Knight Street Corridor on the east. One of Vancouver’s earliest immigrant communities, Sunset was originally called South Hills. Folded into the City of Vancouver in 1929, this ethnically diverse, mostly working-class neighbourhood is warm and welcoming, never forgetting its immigrant roots, always respecting its neighbours.

Sunset has steadily progressed into a vibrant commercial center of unique, independently owned shops with an exciting, exotic flair. Southeast Asian lifestyles reign supreme here, with several shopping and dining districts offering wide varieties of exotic tastes, gifts, and fashions from far away hometowns and cultures.

Entertainment, Restaurants, Cafes

With many exotic options to choose from, entertainment rises to a whole new level in Sunset. In February, follow the traditional Lion Dance which bestows Chinese New Year blessings throughout Sunset’s famous Punjabi District. Home to the Punjabi Market, this 5-block area is packed with all manner of colourful silk sarees, 22-karat gold jewelry, bangles, earrings, necklaces gleaming with bling, and trays of decadent, scrumptuous desserts perfumed with the aromas of exotic spices and incense… this is the place to shop till you drop!

In April, celebrate the Sikh New Year by following the massive and colourful Vaisakhi Parade in a large circuit of the neighbourhood packing the streets from the stunningly beautiful Ross Street Temple down to the riverfront, up Main to 49th and then back down Ross again, returning to the Temple. Celebrate Canada Day on 1 July at the Sunset Community Centre – the past summer saw a flash mob performance mysteriously materialize in the street in the midst of the celebration! Assembling instantaneously out of the crowds, a perfectly choreographed dance segment was performed, onlookers were amazed and delighted, and then the flash mob vanished as dancers quickly dispersed back into the crowd.

In November (this varies with the lunar calendar), celebrate the Hindu New Year with the 5-day Diwali Festival, also at the Sunset Community Centre. Broadly speaking, this is a celebration of good over evil, marked by lighting long rows of small clay lamps, fireworks, music, dancing, and arts and crafts. In between festivals, Sunset restaurants keep the neighbourhood excitement stoked by serving extraordinary Southeast Asian dishes, as well as an amazing variety of delicious international cuisine. All India Sweets & Restaurant, at the corner of 49th Avenue and Main, serves fabulous Indian desserts as well as its all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet. Ho Yuen Kee in the Punjab Market is famous for its signature Cantonese seafood, as well as traditional dishes like fried rice and chow mein.Tandoori Raj Restaurant, close to the riverfront on Fraser St, offers excellent Indian specialties including clay oven dishes and many vegetarian options. Al-Watan Halal Tandoori on Fraser St at 45th Ave offers a delicious menu of halal Pakistani & Indian dishes, including vegetarian items. Don’t miss the excellent chicken biryani (only on Fridays).
