NEIGHBOURHOOD GUIDE
MARPOLE, VANCOUVER

Considered the earliest-settled community on the Pacific coast of Canada, Marpole was home to a First Nation Musqueam village and burial site along the Fraser River dating back to 3500 BCE. In the 1860s, non-natives settled in the deeply forested region, naming it Eburne Station.

With the construction of railways came industrial development and Eburne was renamed after railway superintendent Richard Marpole in 1916. Becoming a major regional industrial centre, enterprising Marpole joined the city of Vancouver in 1929. The construction of bridges from Marpole over the Fraser River enhanced the neighbourhood’s standing, and today it is a vibrant community with a diverse population.

Located along Vancouver, British Columbia’s southern edge, Marpole is a bustling residential neighbourhood on the Fraser River’s north bank. It’s bounded by W. 57th Ave. to the north, Ontario St. to the east, Angus Dr. to the west, and the beautiful Fraser River to the South. With something for everyone, Marpole is an enterprising, family-friendly neighbourhood with an eclectic mix of high-class shopping venues, big box retailers, and ‘working river’ industries.

Many older residents have lived their whole lives in Marpole, witnessing the growth and commercial changes that came with major bridge construction between Vancouver and Richmond. Bustling and often congested, Fraser River crossings include the Arthur Laing Bridge from Vancouver Airport, the Oak Street Bridge (Hwy 99), and the Canada Line Skytrain pedestrian/bicycle bridge. In spite of congested arteries, a cohesive sense of history keeps Marpole’s heart beating strongly, fortified by a full calendar of community activities.
