KILLARNEY, VANCOUVER

Killarney has lots of green space for you to enjoy. Maybe this is because it was the last neighbourhood developed in Vancouver, British Columbia, with settlement finally taking off only during the 1950s. Serving the city’s need for more housing, the area known as Champlain Heights was added to Killarney in the 1970s, and then Fraser Lands, with its row houses and exceptional river views, was developed in the 1990s.

Riverfront development is still continuing today with the rise of Killarney’s exciting new River District along the beautiful Fraser River. But, all in all, it’s still a neighbourhood that very successfully combines green space with urban living.

Running north from the Fraser River with Elliott Street, Vivian Drive and Vivian Street on the west, Killarney is bounded on the north by E. 41st St and Kingsway, and on the east by Boundary Road, which is also Vancouver’s eastern border with the City of Burnaby. Popular shopping and dining venues line the main thoroughfares, as well as within Killarney’s interior.

Strolling the parklands of this beautiful green neighbourhood is a favourite pastime. Walking along the Fraser River offers panoramic views of fishing and tug boats working, seals playing in the water, and eagles, seagulls, and other waterfowl flying overhead. Housing in Killarney mostly consists of single-family detached homes and townhouses, with high-rise units available along the Fraser River. Roughly 60 percent of residents are homeowners, 40 percent are renters, and the average household income is $64,189. The neighbourhood is a great mix of families (50%–with about half having kids at home), singles (30%), and couples (20%).

On Killarney’s Fraser River waterfront, River District is becoming a European-style mini-city with a charming pedestrian-only plaza. An award-winning master-planned community, River District offers 7,000 homes for up to 15,000 residents, and over 500,000 square feet of retail and office space. Five km of riverfront pathways are under development, as well as sports fields, a new elementary school, four daycare centres, and a waterfront community centre.

There are seven schools in Killarney, six elementary and one secondary. Killarney schoolchildren attending Captain James Cook, Dr. George M. Weir, Dr. H.N. MacCorkindale, Champlain Heights, and Champlain Heights Annex elementary schools go on to attend the local Killarney Secondary School. Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School students usually go on to attend Windermere Secondary in neighboring Renfrew-Collingwood because of its proximity.


Public Transportation

All of Metro and Greater Vancouver is easily within reach for Killarney residents with excellent public transit services conveniently close at hand. Buses serve most of the main boundary streets of Killarney, as well as a web of interior roads. The frequent bus service from E. 41st St to the Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain Station offers additional public transportation via the Expo Line to all of Greater Vancouver.

Six parks in Killarney share 52 hectares of natural beauty. With well over double the green space of any other Vancouver neighbourhood, Killarney’s residents are never more than a few steps away from a place to play, picnic, or peacefully bask in the leafy sunshine. Two community centres offer family friendly events and activities.

There is also a state-of-the-art public leisure pool in Killarney, and a world-class ice rink constructed for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Fraserview Golf Course is not only a great course but also has a nice trail all around its perimeter and an off-leash dog area. Many trails also run all along the riverfront, offering excellent picnicking with beautiful, panoramic views of the Fraser River.
