Established in 1865 as a beach and summer destination for wealthy New Westminster residents, Hastings-Sunrise was originally a popular recreation spot known as New Brighton Resort. With a major port along the waterfront as well, employment prospects attracted a large working-class Italian population. The townsite that rose up around the resort was named Hastings in honor of a visit by the Royal Navy’s Admiral Hastings in 1869.

This area produced the first wharf, hotel, post office, road, telephone, and even real estate transaction in what is now known as Vancouver. Hastings officially joined the City of Vancouver in 1911. A neighbouring subdivision named Sunrise Ridge was developed in the 1940s, and soon the name Hastings-Sunrise came to be associated with this area.

There are nine elementary schools in Hastings-Sunrise, including Chief Maquinna, Dr. A.R. Lord, Garibaldi, Hastings, Sir John Franklin, Sir Matthew Begbie, Thunderbird, and Tillicum Annex. Many older children attend the local Vancouver Technical Secondary, and others attend Templeton Secondary in the next-door Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood.


Public Transportation

Bus services to all of the Metro and Greater Vancouver area are frequent, servicing the neighbourhood via East Broadway, East Hastings St, Nanaimo St, McGill St, Rupert St, and Boundary Road. From Rupert St, the Millennium Line Skytrain also offers excellent commuting, shopping, and sightseeing services to all of Greater Vancouver.

Hastings-Sunrise is an evergreen haven for fun-loving families. Topping the long list of neighborhood parks, the 15-acre Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) ‘Playland’ opened in 1910 and is the oldest amusement park in Canada. Returning every year, untold millions of visitors come to enjoy all the rides, games, and thrills that are continually upgraded to ensure the fun never ends.

A city plan for transforming the PNE into “Hastings Park” over the coming 20 years will see the development of Vancouver’s second largest park. Aiming to develop long-term sustainability for the area, the master plan will improve connections between existing green spaces, the Burrard Inlet waterfront, and additional natural habitats and parklands.

The neighbourhood parks in Hastings-Sunrise also offer a full calendar of family friendly events throughout the year. Coming up on October 2nd will be the annual Pandora Park Harvest Festival. There will be a barbeque lunch, a petting zoo, face painting, balloon twisting, corn shucking contests, coffee sack and 3-legged races, music, dancing, arts and crafts, games, and lots of prizes, including awards for the Largest- or Strangest-Looking Vegetable in the Garden Contest.
