DUNBAR SOUTHLANDS, VANCOUVER

Dunbar-Southlands is undoubtedly one of Vancouver, British Columbia’s most refined areas. The neighbourhood sits southwest of Downtown between English Bay and the mouth of the Fraser Valley River. It is a characterful, quaint, residential area with a rich heritage and a population of around 21,000 people.

The neighbourhood has a relaxed and safe atmosphere, with small businesses, a number of forested areas, and stunning historic homes. The median household income in the region is roughly twice the regional average, and the neighbourhood consists mainly of homeowners and detached houses, along with an air of old-world elegance.

The neighbourhood is also the home territory of the Musqueam First Nation. It’s believed that native Indians settled in Southlands as early as 400 B.C. The area around the mouth of the Fraser Valley River provided the perfect environment for hunting and fishing for the coastal Salish Indians who once lived in the area. White settlers occupied the region in the 1860s, and the first significant land development occurred in the 1920s. Many of the homes built during this period still remain as single-family homes to this day.

Just a 20-minute drive from Vancouver, Dunbar-Southlands offers a refreshing break from the hustle of the city. With cherry blossom-lined streets, beautiful forests and unique real estate, Dunbar-Southlands has a friendly and welcoming community vibe.

The area is safe and fairly quiet, with a mix of families both young and old, as well as a charming selection of stores and cafes in Dunbar Village. Much of the entertainment and recreational activities around Dunbar-Southlands centres on nature and the wild. Locals can be found walking their dogs or horse riding along the Fraser River Trail, and the Pacific Spirit Regional Park is the perfect place for walkers and runners.

There are a number of trails that network through the 800 hectares of woodland, along with an abundance of wildlife that inhabit the area, including deer and eagles. For golfing enthusiasts, Point Grey Golf and Country Club and McCleery Golf Course both offer excellent golfing and stunning views. Dunbar-Southlands also hosts a number of community events in summer and winter, including Salmonberry Days and the Dunbar Holiday Craft Fair.

Dunbar-Southlands is one of the City of Vancouver’s more affluent areas and features a mix of unique and impressive homes. With detached houses, estates, farms, and luxury mansions, the area is known as one of the region’s most expensive postal codes. It’s not uncommon to find Edwardian-style homes and English Arts and Crafts architecture, and many of the buildings are now listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register.

Dunbar-Southlands can be split into four separate areas. North Southlands comprises a range of housing; the Musqueam Indian Reserve is inhabited by the Musqueam community and long-term land holding developments, while West Southlands is primarily occupied by detached houses with large plots of land. The Southlands area features a number of horse stables, farms, and impressive estate homes, as well as smaller yet equally elegant single-family homes in a semi-rural setting.

Although the majority of the real estate is in the form of detached homes, there are a small number of more affordable low-rise condominium buildings that have been built along Dunbar Street. In terms of renting, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to rent their basement suite or entire home to students of the University of British Columbia, which is located nearby.

Public Transportation

The area is about a 20-minute drive from Downtown Vancouver, and can be accessed by car, bicycle, or public transit. While Dunbar-Southlands doesn’t have a direct Skytrain link, there is a network of bus routes that connects the area to Downtown, local Skytrain terminals, and other popular areas.

Access to Richmond, Burnaby, East Vancouver, and New Westminster is incredibly convenient, and there are a number of cycling routes that run across the region. Popular shopping districts can be accessed via public transport, such as the 41st Avenue corridor of shops and Granville Street. Vancouver’s International Airport is also conveniently located less than 20 minutes away.

Dunbar-Southlands is also home to high-ranking and elite private institutes, such as Crofton House, St George’s School, and Ivy Montessori, a private preschool.

Dunbar-Southlands is a family-oriented area with a mix of families with children, married and cohabiting households, and retirees. The neighbourhood is an incredibly close-knit community and offers the perfect setting to raise a family, with great local schools and plenty of recreational spaces and activities. Dunbar Little League is one of Vancouver’s most active kids’ baseball and T-Ball leagues, and the neighbourhood has a number of churches and places of worship.
