Positioned between the Fraser Valley River and the Golden Ears mountains, Maple Ridge is a city in British Columbia with a population of around 76,000, and spans an area of 85.5 sq. kilometres.

As B.C.’s fifth oldest city, Maple Ridge offers a blend of history and rural activities.

Agriculture is an important part of Maple Ridge’s economy, particularly berry crops and horse breeding, but the city is also very active in supporting new business development.

Maple Ridge is connected to Langley via the Golden Ears Bridge, and to Pitt Meadows via Highway 7, and is well connected with other major cities such as Mission.

Maple Ridge began in the late 1800s, yet for centuries prior to that, Aboriginals inhabited the area and engaged in hunting, farming, and fishing along the ripe Fraser Valley River. Following the Gold Rush in the mid 19th century, dairy farming was established and Maple Ridge began to grow into the municipality it is today. Haney

As Maple Ridge’s Downtown core, Haney is a heritage district and has a number of facilities including a mall complex, leisure centre, public library, and a number of schools.

Whonnock

Located in the eastern side of Maple Ridge, Whonnock is a nice rural community which has fruit farms, a lake park, kayak club, retail store, and other amenities.

Ruskin

Located on the north shore of the Fraser River, Ruskin is a tree-lined neighbourhood that borders Whonnock and Whonnock Creek. Ruskin students generally attend the school in Whonnock.

Thornhill

Located on the slope of Grant Hill, Thornhill is a vibrant community that rises above the surrounding land offering spectacular views of the Fraser Valley. There isn’t a school in the area, so most students attend Whonnock School.

Albion

Albion is the oldest, non-indigenous community in the district. The area features both newer construction and heritage homes.

Kanaka Creek

This historic residential area was originally inhabited by Hawaiian settlers, and is now a suburban neighbourhood located along the banks of Kanaka Creek.

There are 18 elementary schools, 5 secondary schools, and several other educational institutes in and around Maple Ridge. Many of the secondary schools offer unique programs and accept international students, and Garibaldi Secondary School also offers the International Baccalaureate program. Some elementary schools provide non-traditional programs as well, such as year-round schooling and a cyber school program. There are also several private schools in Maple Ridge, including Meadowridge School (a Christian K-12 school), James Cameron School (Grade 2-7 for those with learning disabilities), and St. Patrick’s Catholic School. Post-secondary education is available in Maple Ridge through Spratt Shaw College, BCIT, and Douglas College.
