Lifestyle and Culture

Maple Ridge began in the late 1800s, yet for centuries prior to that, Aboriginals inhabited the area and engaged in hunting, farming, and fishing along the ripe Fraser Valley River. Following the Gold Rush in the mid 19th century, dairy farming was established and Maple Ridge began to grow into the municipality it is today. Much of Maple Ridge’s lifestyle is based around the outdoors, and the city offers a number of recreational activities including fishing on the Fraser Valley, cycling, hiking, bird watching, kayaking, and horseback riding. Maple Ridge also has great shopping facilities, where you can pick up stylish furniture, clothes, speciality toys, and artwork. Maple Ridge has a large number of European-Canadian residents, and a small Aboriginal, South Asian, and Chinese population. The city hosts a number of yearly festivals and annual parades, including the Rogers Santa Claus Parade. As Maple Ridge’s Downtown core, Haney is a heritage district and has a number of facilities including a mall complex, leisure centre, public library, and a number of schools.


Located in the eastern side of Maple Ridge, Whonnock is a nice rural community which has fruit farms, a lake park, kayak club, retail store, and other amenities.


Located on the north shore of the Fraser River, Ruskin is a tree-lined neighbourhood that borders Whonnock and Whonnock Creek. Ruskin students generally attend the school in Whonnock.


Located on the slope of Grant Hill, Thornhill is a vibrant community that rises above the surrounding land offering spectacular views of the Fraser Valley. There isn’t a school in the area, so most students attend Whonnock School.


Albion is the oldest, non-indigenous community in the district. The area features both newer construction and heritage homes.
