Whitecourt, located in the central section of the province, has a population of over 10,000 people and is sometimes referred to as the snowmobile capital of Alberta. The city is situated on 26.44 square kilometres of land northwest of Edmonton, near the communities of Blue Ridge, Lonira, Windfall, and Shining Bank.

Four waterways meet in Whitecourt, including Athabasca River, Beaver Creek, McLeod River, and Sakwatamau River, and there are a few small lakes just outside of the community. Highways 32 and 43 connect in the western section of the city. European settlement here first took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Three large mills operate in the area: Blue Ridge Lumber Sawmill / Ranger Board MDF, Millar Western Sawmill / Pulp Mill, and Alberta Newsprint Company Pulp & Paper Mill.
