Tuscany, Calgary – Oasis in the Outskirts

Tuscany is an almost entirely residential neighbourhood, offering a quiet area to raise a family and enjoy the parks and other outdoor spaces located within its boundaries. Residents have to look outside of the neighbourhood for dining options, secondary schools, and entertainment options, but in return are rewarded with a sort of oasis on the edge of the city. Public transportation and nearby highways provide options for travelling both within and outside the neighbourhood.

Located in the northwest section of Calgary along the edge of the city, Tuscany extends from 12 Mile Coulee Road NW in the west to Stoney Trail NW in the east, and from Bow Valley Trail in the north to Nose Hill Drive NW in the south. The neighbourhood is relatively new, and features mostly residential areas with some small clusters of commercial properties. Parks and greenspaces are located throughout the neighbourhood, often connected to local schools, and offer a variety of outdoor activities for families.

Residents of Tuscany must travel outside of the neighbourhood (though not far) to find entertainment options. The Cineplex Odeon Crowfoot Crossing Cinemas in the Crowfoot Crossing neighbourhood (east of Tuscany) features six 3D screens, twelve regular screens, a games area, and concession options. A great place for getting close to animals is the Butterfield Acres Petting Farm, located north of Tuscany. The farm has chickens, goats, pigs, donkeys, turkeys, emus, rabbits, and other small animals, and activities offered include petting and feeding animals, going on wagon or pony rides, roasting hot dogs at a bookable fire pit, and milking goats. Visitors can find food and souvenirs at the onsite concession area/gift shop, and the farm makes a great place for birthday parties and family gatherings. Those interested in golf can head to the nearby Bearspaw Country Club (northwest of Tuscany) or Lynx Ridge Golf Club (south of Tuscany).

Other than chain restaurants, Tuscany has one local spot called The Last Straw Ale House, on Tuscany Boulevard NW. The ale house features pizza and pub food in a venue with classic pub décor. The restaurant holds events every so often, and offers delivery for those living in the area. Other dining options can be found outside of the neighbourhood and include GreenChili in the Crowfoot Crossing neighbourhood (east of Tuscany), which serves a variety of traditional Indian dishes in a comfortable and clean atmosphere; EggsOasis, also in the Crowfoot Crossing neighbourhood, a family-friendly place featuring a variety of breakfast, lunch, and brunch options; and Mr. Guo’s Café, in the Crowfoot Crossing neighbourhood, which specializes in northern Chinese cuisine for delivery or pickup.

Parks in Tuscany include a greenspace around Two-Toed Pond, which features treed areas, walking paths, and birdwatching opportunities; Twelve Mile Coulee, a large park with walking trails, two off-leash dog parks, benches, a small creek, and birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities; greenspace beside Eric Harvie School, which has soccer fields and a small playground; Tuscany Park, with a baseball diamond and soccer fields; greenspace beside St. Basil Elementary / Junior High School, which has soccer fields, a playground, and a baseball diamond; greenspace beside Tuscany School, with playgrounds, soccer fields, walking paths, and a community garden; and a small unnamed greenspace off of Tuscany Valley Drive NW that features a playground, walking paths, benches, and treed areas.

The Tuscany Club is operated by the Tuscany Residents Association and has amenities such as a gymnasium, tennis courts, a skateboard park, rinks, and a splash park. The club hosts a number of events, and is available to book for meetings, events, and programs. Summer day camps for kids and various programs for people of all ages are held at the club for things like sports, arts, fitness, and general interest. The club is open to members, who pay an annual fee to access its amenities and programming. Located east of Tuscany is the Melcor YMCA, which includes a swimming pool, a training pool, a fitness centre, a gymnasium, a studio, steam rooms, and multipurpose rooms. The centre offers a variety of programming for people of all ages in swimming, dance, drama, badminton, soccer, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, yoga/pilates, as well as drop-in programs and personal training.
