Mahogany, Calgary – Brand New Beauty

One of several lake communities in Calgary, Mahogany is among the newest, and its location on the outskirts of the city provides a relaxed, quiet lifestyle within the city limits. Most of the available amenities are chain or big box options, and currently there are few schooling options directly in the neighbourhood. Residents trade some conveniences for a more exclusive residential community, complete with private beaches and a members-only clubhouse. More amenities are in store as the neighbourhood continues to grow.

Mahogany is located in the southeast corner of the city along the outskirts. The neighbourhood extends from 52nd Street SE in the west to 88th Street SE in the east, and from Stoney Trail SE in the north to 178th Avenue SE in the south. Mahogany is a newer neighbourhood, so development is still taking place in some areas. The community prides itself on its beach club and other amenities, providing residents with an opportunity to get together and socialize while enjoying the great outdoors.

Golfing is a common pastime in Mahogany, with three courses located south of the neighbourhood. Carmoney Golf & Country Club is a private 18-hole golf course set on tree-lined rolling hills. The clubhouse has an onsite restaurant offering a variety of quality dishes served in the elegantly decorated space. The clubhouse can be booked for weddings or other private events, complete with catering. Heritage Pointe Golf Club has a public 18-hole course that was designed with traditional Scottish golf courses in mind. The club offers golf lessons, tournaments, and special events for youth and adults, and has practice facilities, a pro shop, and a restaurant. Heritage Pointe is a popular venue for weddings and other private events. Cottonwood Golf & Country Club is another private 18-hole course, and it has a golf academy and corporate tournament opportunities.

Other than chain restaurants, Mahogany has few dining options. Kinjo Sushi & Grill on Mahogany Plaza SE offers beautifully prepared sushi and other Japanese cuisine for eat-in, delivery, or takeout. The restaurant is comfortable and clean, and offers a sushi-making class, as well as catering services. Residents have to travel a little farther from their neighbourhood to seek out post-secondary options. These include Bow Valley College, St. Mary’s University, and CDI College, all of which are located west of the neighbourhood.

Public Transportation

Only a few Calgary Transit routes run through the neighbourhood, including routes 302, 406, and 468. Route 302 is a bus rapid transit route, providing faster, more efficient transportation to other areas of the city. All of these routes allow passengers to access other areas of the city, including downtown.


Family Life

Much of the park space in Mahogany is currently unnamed. Just off Stoney Trail SE in the neighbourhood’s northern section is a greenspace with two small ponds and a walking trail that wraps around the northern border of Mahogany. There are various small parks within the neighbourhood, including one on Mahogany Square SE, with a walking path, basketball hoops, a playground, greenspace, treed areas, and benches; one on Mahogany Heights SE, with a playground, benches, trees, greenspace, and a short walking path; one on Mahogany Way SE, with soccer fields and open greenspace; one on Marquis Common, with a playground, a short walking path, greenspace, and benches; one on Mahogany Boulevard, with a playground and walking trails that circle a large pond; one on Marine Drive SE, with soccer fields, walking paths, and greenspace; and one on Mahogany Manor SE, with two playgrounds, walking paths, greenspace, and benches.

The neighbourhood’s centre is Mahogany Lake and Mahogany West Beach. Mahogany Lake is 63 acres, making it the largest freshwater lake in the city. It has 21 acres of beachfront, an interesting three-part lake design, two residential islands, and two private beaches. The West Beach area features a fire pit, beach volleyball and basketball courts, picnic tables, a playground, a dock, and a complex with restrooms and change rooms. Summer activities include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and pedal boating, while winter activities include ice skating and hockey. The Mahogany Beach Club offers exclusive access to beaches, a splash park, a fishing pier, playground equipment, and fitness equipment. The club has multiple meeting rooms, a gymnasium, a dedicated skate room, and storage and shower facilities. It acts as a meeting place for residents and hosts a number of activities and events.
